The Olympics are sadly coming to a close this week and I’ve loved watching some of my favorite events: gymnastics, swimming, and track! It’s been awe inspiring watching so many Olympic Queens absolutely dominate their sport category.
Simone Biles, the obvious favorite and part of the Final Five gymnastic team brought home five medals, Gold in the women’s Vault, Team All-around, floor exercise, individual all around and bronze in women’s beam!
She is the first woman to win three consecutive world all around titles, and is an 11 time gold medalist.
“I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, I’m the first Simone Biles. To me, I’m just the same Simone.”
Gabby Douglas, brought home 1 gold medal this year in the women’s all around! But in 2012, she became the first African-American woman to win the individual all-around and first gymnast to win both the team and individual all around gold.
Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to bring home 2 golds in the women’s 100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay!
Simone’s powerful statement in her interview touched me to my core. “This medal is not just for me, it’s for a whole bunch of people who came before me and have been an inspiration to me”.
Michelle Carter is the first woman and African-American woman to win the GOLD in women’s shot put.
Last night, Hubby and I watched Team USA sweep the podium in the women’s 100m hurdles. Riana Rollins took gold, Nia Ali took silver, and thanks to a brilliantly-timed lean, Kristi Castlin (my Sorority Sis!) took the bronze in the 100m hurdles.
I am so proud of all of these women (and so many more!) that represented so beautifully and fiercely at the 2016 Rio Olympics! These Olympic Queens truly inspire me to chase my dreams fearlessly and be the absolutel best I can be!
